Know Your Risks

Knowing your risks and making heart healthy decisions can help prevent heart disease. Risk factors like our genetics are beyond our control. But, others are within reach. The leading contributing risk factors for heart disease that are controllable include3:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Nicotine use
  • Diabetes
  • Unhealthy diet and physical inactivity
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night.
  • Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, lean meats, fat-free or low-fat dairy products and whole grains.
  • Get 20 minutes of moderate physical activity each day.
  • Set a weight loss goal if you’re overweight.
  • Stop smoking. Buckeye can connect you to an addiction specialist and other resources.
  • Get support. Buckeye provides care management to members with chronic conditions, like congestive heart failure and high blood pressure, to help them manage their disease and overall health.

Know Your Numbers

You may believe that you have all of these risk factors under control, but some risk factors like high blood pressure and high cholesterol can be hard to spot. Often, there are no outward symptoms of either. Visit your doctor often to monitor your numbers.

1 in 5 people don't know they have high blood pressure.

120/80 = NORMAL
Keep up the good work. Continue your diet and exercise and don’t change any medications before talking to your doctor.
 121-139/81-89= MODERATE
Make healthy lifestyle changes and talk to your doctor. Your blood pressure can easily increase and be a serious health risk.
 140/90 = HIGH
You are at risk for stroke and heart attack. Talk to your doctor about making changes to your diet, exercise and/or medicine.
